The 2025-26 school year at Rock Port Elementary is off to a smooth and positive start! Students began the year by learning about their first Energy Bus principle, “You’re the Driver,” which emphasizes taking personal responsibility for our thoughts, words, and actions. The message came to life when the Blue Jay mascot made an appearance in the cafeteria, driving home the point – literally – with a golf cart! Students also gathered for their first Blue Jay Families meeting, where mixed-grade level groups built connections and discussed what is and isn’t within their circle of control.
Students and staff were treated to two exciting guest visits this quarter. On September 11, students and staff enjoyed a visit from comedian and ventriloquist Todd Oliver and his talking dog, who shared an uplifting message about perseverance, trying new things, and the powerful role teachers play in students’ lives. A big thank you goes out to Liberty Theatre for helping make that event possible. On October 22, author Aaron Wills stopped by to share his book “We Mix Up Our ABCs” with students in grades K-2 and talk with grades 3-5 about how authors use the design process to create books. Mr. Wills is a former teacher and principal with family ties to Atchison County.
Academic and leadership goals also took center stage this quarter. Our schoolwide Accelerated Reader (AR) goal is 7,500 points, and students have already earned 1,347 points. A total of 115 students met their personal AR goals and celebrated with a fun hallway run – a reward so popular that students are already hoping for a repeat! Blue Jay Families also created vision boards as part of the second Energy Bus Principle, “Create a Positive Vision,” and began brainstorming what they might perform in a talent show if the school reaches its AR goal by the end of the year. Fifteen students ran for elementary student council positions, and this year’s leadership team includes Aislyn Barnes, Blaykleigh Daugherty, Belle Herron, Beau Waigand, Kolcyn Barnes, and Addaline Larson.
The first quarter wrapped up with plenty of community spirit and fun. A big shout-out goes to the elementary PTO for securing sponsorships for all Frozen Fridays this year, thanks to generous local businesses and individuals. Students celebrated Halloween with their annual fall festival parties and costume parades through the elementary hallways and the local nursing home, spreading joy and smiles throughout the community. Staff joined the fun by dressing up as characters from various Adam Sandler movies. The first quarter also featured Cheer Camp, with more than 50 elementary students performing at the pep assembly and football game on October 24.
