Nodaway Valley came to Blue Jay Stadium Friday, November 14, with something to prove as Rock Port had defeated the Thunder in the regular season game.

To start the District 6 championship game, Rock Port elected to receive the ball. With the first play, quarterback Westyn Amthor hit wideout Jack Meyerkorth on a crossing route, who took it 65 yards for a touchdown. Brock Holmes capped it off with the two-point conversion. The Thunder, who rely heavily on passing, caught the Jays asleep with a running play up the middle, answering back on their first play of the game with a touchdown, and the battle began.

The Jays managed to hold the Thunder, allowing only one more score in the second quarter as Rock Port tacked on four more with Brock Holmes scoring twice and Westyn Amthor and Jack Meyerkorth each scoring once. Nodaway Valley outscored Rock Port by two points in the second half as the Thunder scored 26 to the Jays’ 22 points.

Offensively, the Jays had 413 yards, 302 in rushing and 111 passing. Brock Holmes totaled 258 yards rushing and receiving, and four touchdowns, combined with Jack Meyerkorth’s 106 total yards and two touchdowns. Westyn Amthor got in on the action with 24 yards and two touchdowns.

Defensively the Jays played strong, forcing Nodaway Valley to have to get rid of the ball quick as Ryder Herron, Gabe Gebhards, Quentin Jackson, Jadyn Geib, and Desmond Chaney were crashing hard. Linebacker Tayden Cook and Camden McEnaney filled the middle, along with defensive backs Jack Meyerkorth, Logan Ellis, and Brock Holmes, who defended the pass. Meyerkorth came up with an interception, and Gabe Gebhards recovered a fumble, both setting the Jays up for their next score.

Rock Port would struggle at times, shooting themselves in the foot with penalties, racking up a total of 122 yards in penalties and creating big holes they had to dig their way out of.

The Jays will travel to St. Joseph Saturday, November 22, to take on St. Joseph Christian at 1:00 p.m. The game will be at St. Joseph Christian High School (5401 Gene Field Road).
