• Showing at the Tarkio Theatre: “The Avengers” with John Carroll and Adele Mara, “Castaway,” “Intruder In The Dust,” “Bride For Sale” with Claudette Colbert, Robert Young, and George Brent, “Tea for Two” with Doris Day and Gordon MacRae, “Rock Island Trail,” and “Dakota” with John Wayne.

• A New Year’s Eve dance will be held on Monday night at the Community Building in Tarkio under the sponsorship of the Booster Club. The Sheridan Five will provide the musical entertainment.

• A run-in with a power rip saw he was using at his job at Rees-Copeland-Kelly Lumber Yard last Thursday caused finger amputations to the hand of Jess “Bud” Alsup. The entire little finger was amputated and three other fingers were amputated above the knuckles.

• Cpl. James Wesley Asbury, son of James Asbury of Tarkio, is missing in action in Korea. He has been in the Army since 1942 and also served in Europe.

January 1, 1976

• Funeral services will be held January 2 for lifelong Atchison County resident William Peter Hull. William was born January 22, 1897. He spent his entire lifetime farming on his farm and also served on the Colfax Road District Commission and London School Board. He served in France during WWI and was a member of the Allen-Schiffern American Legion Post.

• Fifteen friends and relatives surprised Fay Campbell Sunday evening, December 28, at his home to help him celebrate his 80th birthday. Cake and ice cream were served and the evening was spent playing pinochle.

• Specials at Hy-Vee include: Bounce fabric softener, 20-count package for 79¢; Audubon bird seed, 5-pound bag for 69¢; Hy-Vee soft margarine, 1-pound bowl for 43¢; and chuck roast, 69¢ per pound.

• A Christmas tea was held for the retired teachers and staff members of the Tarkio R-I School District Friday, December 19. Those attending were Cecil Corbin, Olga Emmert, Evelyn Kemer-Barnett, Katie Townsend, Gussie Van Leuven, Mr. and Mrs. Earl Campbell, Mary Smith, and Fern Henning.

• Earlene Hicks, staff member of the Tarkio Avalanche, hit the streets to ask residents about their New Year’s traditions: Vicki White – “We always eat southwest noodle salad with black-eyed peas. Black-eyed peas are good luck.” Sue Davis – “We always have ham and green beans on New Year’s Day so we can eat ‘high on the hog’ and have money all year long.” Millie and Charlie Hurst – “We always spend New Year’s Day with family and friends. We have dinner, then watch ball games, and the women put a jigsaw puzzle together. We have done this for over 40 years.”

• This year’s Little Mr. and Miss Christmas were Patrick Murphy and Makayla Vette. They were selected as a result of winning the coloring contest sponsored by the Nu Sigma Chapter of Beta Sigma Phi and rode in the Christmas Parade.

• The Tarkio/Westboro Ministerial Alliance’s Adopt-A-Family program was a success this year. Eighteen sponsors enabled 30 families to enjoy a blessed Christmas. Of the 30 families, there were 22 adults and 55 children.

• Winners of the Christmas light contest were: Harvey and Roberta Bennett, Cyndy White and Derald McEnaney, Steve and Cheryl Hodge, The Flower Mill, Sharlyn’s Beauty Den, Wayne and Linda Bennett, Steve and Renea Prather, and Jamie and Stacie Stillwell.
