• Specials at the B.P. Hunter Store in Fairfax include fine granulated sugar, 10 pounds for 97¢, and Hi-Ho crackers, 1 pound box for 31¢.
• A house on the Ralph Lawrence place in the Elk Dale community was completely destroyed by fire about noon Friday. The house was occupied by Mr. and Mrs. Gilbert Johnson and son, who were not at home at the time of the fire.
• Of the 326 Hy-Klas Food Stores in four states, the B.P. Hunter stores of Fairfax rates 11th. The local store rates sixth in the sale of dairy products, eighth in the sale of fruits and vegetables, and 11th in the sale of ice cream.
• It was not a white Christmas this year in Missouri. The temperature reached 60 degrees on Friday and sunshine and mild weather prevailed through Christmas. By Tuesday night, however, a cold wave came and the mercury dropped to six below zero early Wednesday.
• Fairfax Boy Scouts made and repaired toys Christmas Eve and then distributed them to children in need. On Saturday morning, the Scouts picked up corn that had been missed by the picker at E.F. Youel’s place. They earned $30.
January 1, 1976
• With this issue, the Fairfax Forum starts 84 years of continuous publication – the oldest business in the community. It was established in 1892 by W.H. Hambaugh. With this issue, the Forum also goes under new management with Charles T. Norton as publisher and Doug Crews as associate editor. Nancy Gaines will continue to do the type composition and take care of mailing and Mary Louise Sims will be helping with writing and bookkeeping.
• Mr. and Mrs. Everett Curry will celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary January 1. They established their home on a farm near Fairfax and later moved to town, where for the past several years they have operated the Fairfax Cleaners.
• A Craig woman is being held in the Holt County Jail charged with first degree murder of her husband. The family lived just north of Craig on Hwy. 59 and the husband was a foreman with a construction firm working on I-29. According to reports, the woman shot her husband with a rifle sometime Friday evening.
December 28, 2000
• The Fairfax R-3 Music Department is collecting Pepsi points. The points on Pepsi products can be used to help purchase several different items for the music department.
• Community Hospital Association in Fairfax is holding its annual appeal fundraiser. This year’s focus is a project to upgrade the surgical suite with some new equipment, such as a surgical bed.
• The Fairfax R-3 elementary students and teachers held a mock wedding for Sarah Gaines and Ryan Osburn on December 20. Sarah, a kindergarten teacher at Fairfax, and Ryan, a teacher at Craig, will be getting married on December 30. Boss the Bulldog mascot walked her down the aisle. Fourth grader Aaron Scarbrough performed the ceremony. The theme of the wedding was “When Two Seeds Become An Apple” and the wedding party walked through an archway made of yardsticks created by Logan Pyeatt and Michael Graves.
• At their December meeting, the Wolverine 4-H Club members made gingerbread men that were then taken to the hospital and given to the patients.
