• Funeral services were held Monday for Mary (Schnitker) Harmes, 76, one of Rock Port’s kindliest women. Mrs. Harmes was born on a farm near Nishnabotna upon which her parents, Frank and Louisa Schnitker, had settled when they came from Germany several years before the Civil War. She had attended a German School in Corning and also attended the Nishnabotna grade school, where there is still standing in the schoolyard a tree which she planted while going to school there.
• Saturday of this week is St. Patrick’s Day. Back in the day, Rock Port’s four saloons did a thriving business with men who failed to wear the green having to treat their companions. One time, a man lacking green was chased to the roof of the Bischof Hardware Store by several friends and he remained there until a piece of green ribbon tied to a brickbat was thrown up on the roof so he could come down properly adorned.
• Showing at the Paramount Theatre in Rock Port: “Rogue of Sherwood Forest” with John Derek and Diana Lynn.
• Specials at Hy-Klas Food Stores and Locker Services in Rock Port include: Tide, 2 large sizes for 59¢; whole catfish, 59¢ per pound; hickory smoked sliced bacon, 55¢ per pound; and Butternut coffee, 83¢ per pound.

• Showing at the Paramount Theatre in Rock Port: “One Of Our Dinosaurs Is Missing” – A Walt Disney production and “Hustle.”
• Tony Schomburg, son of Mr. and Mrs. George Schomburg, Rock Port, was presented with the Eagle Scout badge at the Methodist Church Sunday at the Court of Honor for Scouts of Troop 59. Senator Hardin Cox was the guest speaker.
• Sportsmen will now pick up their fishing and hunting licenses at Opp and Prime Sporting Goods Store in Rock Port and Vic’s Hardware in Tarkio. Licenses will no longer be sold at the county clerk’s office at the courthouse in Rock Port.
• Miss Paula Mullins, 21, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Ned Greenley, Rock Port, was selected queen of the Nebraska Paint Horse Club March 7. She will compete for title of Miss APHA at the American Paint Horse Association’s national championship show in Baton Rouge, Louisiana.

• The Rock Port R-II Board of Education announced that Doug Miller will be high school principal for the 2001-02 school year and Mandy Rathel will be the full-time K-12 art teacher.
• New trash receptacles have been set up around Rock Port. The attractive containers weigh around 500 pounds, so won’t blow away, and will be emptied by Tri-County Sanitation.
• Funeral services were held Wednesday, March 14, at the United Methodist Church in Rock Port for Don George Lininger. In 1950, Don started Rock Port Plumbing. He served on the original pool board and was instrumental in starting the swim team. He served on the city council and was a member of the Rock Port Volunteer Fire Department for 27 years, serving as chief from 1976 to 1982.
