May 18, 1951

• In order to provide quarters large enough to house the Rock Port fire department’s big truck and the rural fire association’s truck, the local volunteer fire department has purchased from Rex Shandy the iron-clad building on South Main Street at present occupied by the Rock Port Sheet Metal Co.

• Rather an unusual situation prevails in the 1951 graduating class of Rock Port High school in that two of the graduates share salutatorian honors. They are Martha Adams and Barbara Caudle. The class valedictorian is Mary Rhodes.

• Keith Boettner suffered serious but not critical injuries in a farming accident in the Lone Cedar district north of Rock Port. Keith was riding on the front of a tractor driven by his nephew, Charles Boettner, when the tractor hit a depression and Keith fell off. The rear wheels of the farm implement ran against Keith’s body causing the fracture of several ribs and a shoulder injury, as well as severe bruising.

• The Missouri State Chamber of Commerce has estimated that Atchison County did more than 44 million dollars’ worth of business in sale of products, commodities, and services in 1950. That included: farming, $19 million; transportation/utilities, $1 million; wholesale trade, $12 million; retail trade, $10 million; and services and profession, $1 million.

• Showing at the Paramount Theatre in Rock Port: “Texans Never Cry” with Gene Autry and “He’s A Cockeyed Wonder” with Mickey Rooney and Terry Moore.

May 20, 1976

• Terry Taylor, legislative assistant for Congressman Jerry Litton, will be the guest speaker at the Rock Port High School commencement program. Forty-four seniors will earn diplomas at the event.

• MBPXL Corp resumed the slaughtering of cattle Monday with approximately 80 people working, while 450 union employees continued their strike into the seventh week.

• Virginia Broady is a new intern at the Atchison County Mail. A 1972 Auburn, Nebraska, high school graduate, she is attending the University of Nebraska – Lincoln and majoring in English and Journalism.

• Mr. and Mrs. Don Tharp of Rock Port purchased at public auction the modern home with approximately seven acres of land plus five trailer rental homes belonging to Cleo Hutchings May 17. The amount paid for the real estate was $28,100.

May 17, 2001

• Kelli Swalley is the new Postmaster at Rock Port Post Office. Kelli has worked in Maryville and Mound City.

• The Rock Port High School Blue Jays are District Track Champions. Team members are Regan Griffin, Shawn Shineman, Chris Volker, Jordan Shrader, Dustin Sapp, Travis Holmes, Randy Clemens, Jared Meyerkorth, Trent Shineman, Brent Dahlin, Brandon Makings, Kyle Rice, Hyatt Haynes, and Josh True.

• Rebecca Mianulli is the Rock Port Optimist Teenager of the Month. She is the daughter of Cheryl and Charlie Zabel and Mike Mianulli.

• Thirty-one students graduated from Rock Port High School in the Class of 2001. Jessica Moran was valedictorian and Amy VanMeter was salutatorian.
