• Showing at the Fair Theatre in Fairfax: “King Solomon’s Mines” with Stewart Granger and Deborah Kerr and “Pretty Baby” with Dennis Morgan and Betsy Drake.
• Mrs. Irvan Stump of Fairfax won an award from KMA’s “Stump Us” program. She stumped the gang when they were unable to play a song she requested. She received a 32-piece set of dishes by Salem as a prize.
• Around 40 Boy Scouts from Fairfax, Rock Port, and Tarkio enjoyed a camporee at Walkup’s Grove school grounds east of Fairfax. The boys erected their tents and started camping Sunday afternoon and broke camp Tuesday at noon.
• Fairfax got a mention in the May issue of Reader’s Digest. The article detailed the scarcity of doctors and mentioned the building of Fairfax Community Hospital.
• The Dick Harmes’ public sale saw three saddle mares, each with a colt, sold for $65 to $90 each. A huge crowd attended and the English Grove ladies served lunch.
• A severe wind storm, accompanied by heavy rainfall and an electric storm, struck here Friday and cut power. A small tornado struck near Burlington Junction, destroying two corn cribs, unroofing a large tobacco shed, and killing 30 to 40 hogs on the Ed Poe farm.

• Some old, high-top button shoes were discovered during remodeling at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Gene Herron, who live two miles east of Rock Port. It is not known how old the shoes are. The farm was purchased by Mrs. Ross Herron’s ancestors in 1891. The first owners of the home were John and Christina Fischer. They were reared and married in Wurtemburg, Germany, and came to the states when he was 20. He worked at the butcher’s trade in Buffalo, New York, before coming to Atchison County.
• Stephen Bonagurio, 22, of Fenton, Missouri, has been hired as Fairfax High School football coach for 1976-77.
• Candidates who have been selected to participate in the Fairfax Fair Queen Contest are Dina Pinzino, Gail Strough, Christine Gomel, Cindy Bolton, Vickie O’Riley, Linda Whitford, Barbara Bolton, Kris Fisher, and Jo Beth Wiley.
• A group of Fairfax-area residents, working for a number of weeks on a variety of gospel songs with the Bownessaires, under the direction of Bob Bowness, are nearing their goal of cutting a 33 1/3 L.P. stereo record and 8-track tape. The actual cutting will be June 13 at the Fairfax Baptist Church with a recording team from Kansas City.

• The Fairfax kindergarten graduation was held May 24 in the Fairfax High School Auditorium. This year’s theme was “Our Heroes.” Graduates are Bridgett Sparks, Hunter McGlothlin, Nikki Allen, Heather BeBout, Nikita Gladman, Kelly Brown, Aleesha Ball, Kourtnee Umbarger, Paxton Barnett, Nick Simmons, and Tristan Ray.
• The weight room at Fairfax High School is receiving a facelift. The room will be painted and rubber floor will be added.
• Rachel Burke and Stephanie Sinkhorn were chosen to lead the Fairfax High School Marching Pride in the fall 2001 marching season.
• Jamie (Irvine) Freemyer of Fairfax is a new stylist at The Mane Thing on Main Street. Jamie will be working part-time at the shop alongside owner Betty Wennihan.
