• Nearly 100 horse lovers and enthusiasts in Atchison County have formed a saddle club. The club is open to anyone interested in horseback riding, the purpose of the organization being to promote horseback riding and teaching horsemanship to adults and children.

• Three youth from Rock Port left Saturday for Boonville to attend Boys’ State. They are Henry Lee Klump and James Breazile, sponsored by Ralph Greer American Legion Post, and Ralph Mulvania, representing the Rock Port Community Club.

• Mr. and Mrs. John C. Stapel of Columbia were surprised to run into three Atchison and Holt County acquaintances while in Anchorage, Alaska, on a trip with the National Editorial Association. The acquaintances were “Bones” and Wilma Hedrick, formerly of Fairfax, and Harold Moats, who attended school and Tarkio College in Atchison County.

• Mr. and Mrs. George Opp, who operate Hotel Opp in Rock Port, are improving the facilities. When alterations are completed, only four of the 40 guest rooms in the hotel will be without bath or half-bath.

• Showing at the Paramount Theatre in Rock Port: “Silver Canyon” starring Gene Autry and “Emergency Wedding” starring Larry Parks and Barbara Hale.

June 24, 1976

• Showing at the Paramount Theatre in Rock Port: “Ride A Wild Pony.”

• Mr. and Mrs. Lyle Houts and children, Roger and Jeff, were honored Friday and Saturday in Kansas City as Atchison County’s “Bicentennial 4-H Family.”

• Friends and family of Mr. and Mrs. Jim Amthor got together June 20 and painted the store front of Amthor Barber and Beauty Shop, 313 South Main Street. They finished about 5:15 p.m. then had a steak fry that evening.

• District Engineer Walter Vandelicht announced that they hope to open the section of I-29 from Craig to Mound City July 1 and are looking at the end of July for the opening of the entire stretch of the interstate. Only about 14 miles remain to be finished, giving an interstate route from Kansas City, Missouri, to Sioux City, Iowa.

• The oldest resident of Atchison County has passed away at the age of 104. Mrs. Mary McEnaney died early Monday morning at the Pleasant View Nursing Home.

• Three to four inches of rain caused Rock Creek to leave its banks and flood the nearby land.

• During the first session of summer school, the students in Mrs. Suzanne Fentiman’s class made their own Titanics and floated them in the “ocean.” All of the “passengers” aboard would have been safe because none of these student-made ships sank.

• A group of concerned citizens met Thursday, June 14, to discuss ideas on how to save the Paramount Theatre in Rock Port.

• Funeral services were held in Rock Port for Charles Whitelaw Shaw. Mr. Shaw taught vocational agriculture for a total of 35 years, retiring from the Rock Port School District in 1971.

• Three Rock Port couples are celebrating milestone anniversaries. Lewis and Ethel Brindle and Don and Norma Tharp are celebrating their 60th wedding anniversaries and Phillip and Wilma (Krutz) Randall are celebrating their 50th wedding anniversary.
