July 6, 1951

• The Western Auto Store, under the new management of Larry Goodson, is holding a grand re-opening. Sales include: Wizard refrigerator, $184.95; Western flyer bicycle, $34.99; power mower, $84.95; electric toaster, $1.69; and hardwood clothespins, 4 1/2¢ for one dozen.

• Showing at The Paramount Theatre in Rock Port: “Bad Boy” with Audie Murphy and Jane Wyatt and “Bedtime For Bonzo” with Ronald Reagan and Diana Lynn..

• Workmen have been busy this week installing a new flight of concrete steps at the Lutheran Church, the old steps having deteriorated to such an extent they offered only precarious footing.

• With this week’s issue, The Atchison County Mail begins its 74th year of service to Atchison County and the surrounding territory.

• One hundred fifty acres of corn is a big area to get over in one day, but Herbert Cooper of west of Langdon says that is what was done at his farm one day last week. In order to get the job done, four tractors were used, three with four-row machines, so a round trip took care of 28 rows.   

July 8, 1976

• The Atchison County Fair has been expanded this year. The fair, planned for September 9, will include home arts, crafts, gardening, educational booth exhibits and a livestock show and auction. The livestock show will be held at the park and the fair exhibits will be on display at the Memorial Building.

• New officers of the Rock Port Rotary International Club took office July 1. They are: Dr. Gary Powell, president; Keith Stepp, vice-president; and Jim Allen, Jr., board member. Two new members were added this year. They are Carl Kleppinger, chairman of the board of directors at Citizens Bank, and Dr. Jeffrey Powell, optometrist.

• A 15 to 75 minute blackout in Rock Port took place around 11:30 p.m. Saturday as a result of a break-in at the Rock Port light plant. Someone pulled the highline disconnect switch which controls electricity to the city.

• The Citizens Bank of Atchison County donned the image of professionalism July 6 when the Citizens Bank ladies began wearing new, coordinated bank outfits. The blue and white blouses, jackets, vests, jumpers, and slacks can make up to 25 different changes.

• A small crowd gathered at the Rock Port City Park to watch the annual July 4th frog jumping contest. Contestants numbered 41 and the winner was four-year-old Craig Abbott of Rock Port and his frog, Bumpy. They won the $15 first prize. Bumpy achieved an eight-foot, one-inch jump.

• The Sunday Bicentennial celebrations began with a mass church service at the football stadium in which 900 people attended. Pastor Gene Swofford of the Baptist Church was the speaker and the churches combined to form a choir of 60 people.

July 5, 2001

• On June 13, 2001, at 11:20 p.m., Joe and Amy Bradley of Rock Port became the parents of their second daughter, Abby Danielle. She weighed 7 pounds and 11 ounces and is welcomed home by big sister, Jackie, 2.

• Melissa Herron, a student at Rock Port High School, attended the Missouri Girls’ State event sponsored by the American Legion Auxiliary. Melissa was the County Clerk of Price County.

• The Rock Port Rotary Club is co-sponsoring an AARP 55 Alive Driver Safety Class July 16 and 17 at Bank Midwest in Rock Port.
