• Showing at the Fair Theatre in Fairfax: “The Walking Hills” with Randolph Scott and Ella Raines and “Mrs. O’Malley and Mr. Malone” starring Marjorie Main and James Whitmore.
• John Davis has donated equipment from the office of his father, the late Dr. J.M. Davis, for use at Fairfax Community Hospital. The equipment includes surgical instruments, drugs, medical books, and miscellaneous items.
• Fred R. McMahon, Republican candidate for representative in the state legislature, won a smashing victory in Tuesday’s special election to select a successor to succeed the late Dr. J.A. Gray. McMahon beat his opponent, Democrat John J. “Jack” Wright, by nearly 900 votes.
• The 4-State Roundup will begin in Fairfax Thursday night and continue through Sunday. This is the fifth annual event of its kind. Cowboy clowns, burlesque bull fighting, trick and fancy riding and roping, a car-hurdling feat, and trained animal acts are among headliner features.
July 15, 1976
• Myra McMullen of the Milton community caught a 20-pound flathead Sunday at the mouth of the Nishnabotna River west of Watson using a rod and reel and worms for bait. The fish measured 35 inches long with a 22-inch girth.
• An unusual accident involving a tractor trailer truck July 8 caused traffic congestion that afternoon in downtown Fairfax. The rear eight tandem wheels of the trailer became separated from the trailer as the truck, owned by Crouse Cartage Co. of Carroll, Iowa, turned the corner in front of Sly Lumber Co. on Hwy. 59. A 75-foot gash was plowed into the roadway by the trailer dragging on the highway after the wheels came off.
• Richard Davis escaped injury Friday when a grain truck he was driving caught fire and was destroyed. The accident happened in a wheat stubble field south of Davis’ house, 6 1/2 miles southeast of Fairfax. The truck, owned by Thiesfeld Feeds and Seeds, was loaded with about 400 bushels of wheat, which were also destroyed in the fire.
• A “Burger Bash” is planned for Sunday at the Fairfax United Methodist Church as a benefit for the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation. Rev. Jeff Carr will be assisted by youth from the Fairfax churches.
July 12, 2001
• Joel Walter, who taught business, coached boys’ basketball, and was the assistant football coach at Fairfax High School from 1972 to 1975, has retired after 33 years in public education. In June of 1982, he became Assistant Director of the Public School Retirement System/Non-Teacher Retirement System in Jefferson City and then became the executive director in 1997.
• The 18 and Under Trojanette Fast Pitch Softball Team has qualified for nationals in Beaumont, Texas, to be played the week of July 30. Fairfax’s Stephanie Sinkhorn is a member of the team.
• Marjorie Umbarger and Gene Carder, both of Fairfax, came forward to help the Fairfax Community Betterment with the making of new signs located at the north and east entrances to town. Gene did the woodwork and Marjorie did the painting.
• Traci Davis of Fairfax has accepted the position of assistant manager at Tarkio Municipal Pool, where she is also senior lifeguard. She became a lifeguard at the pool three years ago.
