July 13, 1951

• Showing at the Paramount Theatre in Rock Port: “Bandit Queen,” “Up Front” starring David Wayne and Tom Ewell, and “Uncle Tom’s Cabin,” plus three Bugs Bunny cartoons.

• A number of members of the Nemaha County Saddle Club from across the Missouri River in Nebraska visited Rock Port Sunday afternoon as guests of the local saddle club.   

• The street to the Mill Street bridge, leading to Pittsburgh Avenue, was blocked off last week when a large part of the roadway caved off at the west end of the bridge. A tree which had lodged against the bank diverted the stream against the embankment in such a manner that water erosion caused the cave-in.

• F. A. Stiles tells that he recently found an 1883 issue of the Atchison County Journal. The newspaper carried an item which said that a Mr. Bean had just finished painting the interior of the E.J. Stiles home. E.J. Stiles was the father of F.A.

• With 95 paid members, the Rock Port Golf Club is having perhaps the most successful year in its history.

July 15, 1976

• Building of a new bus barn for the Rock Port School District is nearing completion. The bus maintenance shed will be used for repair work and service work. The lot beside the garage will hold the school’s 16 buses when they are not in use. The buses are used for the school’s 12 bus routes.

• Plans have been announced for the opening of the final addition to Interstate 29 with a ceremony at the Holt/Atchison county line on the interstate July 28. Secretary of State James C. Kirkpatrick will give the main address of the day with Senator Hardin Cox acting as master of ceremonies.

• Rock Port has several citizens attending the various national and world activities prominent in the news this week: Mr. and Mrs. Robert Lee Stanton are attending the Democratic National Convention in New York City as guests. Bryan Cox is there acting as an official page. Mr. and Mrs. Robert Fay and Mr. and Mrs. Bluford LaHue are off to Montreal, Canada, where they will view a wide variety of world Olympic sporting events.

• Mr. and Mrs. Ron Hunter purchased the carpentry class house at public auction July 10 for $25,000. The house, located on Rainbow Drive in Rock Port, has three bedrooms, a full bath, large two-car garage, 1,104 square feet of living area plus 24’ by 24’ garage, full basement, and air conditioning.

• Two Rock Port wrestlers participated in the Wrestle The World training camp in Runnells, Iowa. Travis Holmes and Cory Stanton and the other participants received instruction on various wrestling techniques from National and World Champions in freestyle, Greco-Roman, and collegiate.

• Dale Dickkut’s “From The Mayor’s Desk”: Thirty-one citizens attended the meeting concerning the possible designation of downtown Rock Port as a historical district. A representative with the Missouri State Parks has toured the town and visited some of the buildings.

• According to relatives, William Millsap was the first Caucasian child born in Atchison County on December 14, 1839. Millsap was the son of Mr. and Mrs. Callaway Millsap, who moved to Sonora in November of 1839. Two men, Hank Roberts and Thomas Wilson, were the first settlers who had moved to Sonora in the spring of 1839.
