• Showing at the Tarkio Theatre: “Between Midnight and Dawn” starring Edmund O’Brien and Mark Stevens, “Show Boat” starring Kathryn Grayson, Ava Gardner, and Howard Keel, and “Soldiers Three” starring Stewart Granger, Walter Pidgeon, David Niven, and Robert Newton.
• Services were held for John M. Stevenson, lifelong resident and prominent citizen of this community. John Marshall Stevenson was president of the Farmers and Valley Bank of Tarkio and one of the owners of the Tarkio Lumber Company. He was an expert photographer, amateur wireless operator, and also had a keen interest in printing and painting.
• James W. Hayes of Tarkio is enjoying Irish cobbler potatoes which he neither planted nor cultivated, but which are thriving all around the foundation of the new four-room Poplar Street house which he built last fall on a former potato patch. Mr. Hayes brought one specimen weighing more than a pound to the Avalanche office on Monday.
• A chest X-ray clinic for adults in Atchison County will be sponsored by the Atchison County Health Council in early August. A mobile unit will visit Fairfax, Tarkio, Westboro, Watson, and Rock Port and all persons over 15 years of age are urged to take advantage of this opportunity to check on possible chest conditions.
July 22, 1976
• The first Atchison County Pork Queen Contest was held Saturday at St. John’s Lutheran Church near Westboro, Missouri. Judy Hull, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Phillip Hull, was crowned queen after presenting a five minute oral essay and answering questions relating to the pork industry.
• Katherine Kindscher is the new copy editor/news writer for the Avalanche. She will coordinate the coverage of Tarkio-area events and assist with the newspaper’s makeup. She received a Bachelor of Science degree in journalism from Kansas State University in Manhattan.
• Nails welded together, combined with rocks and even a razor blade are among the things thrown at the MBPXL packing plant and its workers by picketers.
• The opening of Funny Girl at the Mule Barn Theatre at Tarkio College on Wednesday marked the fourth show of the 1976 summer season at the theatre. The final production will be “No, No, Nanette.”
July 19, 2001
• Wilbur and Maxine Lang will celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary August 5 at an open house hosted by their children at St. John’s Lutheran Church, Westboro. The couple was married August 1, 1951, in Aberdeen, Maryland, while Wilbur was serving in the Army.
• Christopher Yates and Lisa Hughes of Tarkio will be wed August 25, 2001, at St. John’s Lutheran Church near Westboro. Lisa is a 1993 graduate of Fairfax High School and is employed at Car City Chrysler in St. Joseph, Missouri. Chris is a 1989 graduate of Davenport Central High School and is employed at Advance Services, Inc. in southwest Iowa.
• The U-Turn Diner in Tarkio will close its doors Tuesday, July 31. The diner opened September 27, 1999. Sharon and Gary Sparks are the owners.
• The Westboro Recreation Department voted to construct bathroom facilities at the baseball field in Westboro. A concession stand, equipment room, and a shelter picnic area were also built.
