July 20, 1951

• Bruce and Lewis Rundle, who live on South Main Street in Rock Port, have harvested 500 quarts of raspberries from their garden in town and at their farm, formerly known as Rundle’s Resort, south of Rock Port along the bluffs. The berries have been of extra good quality and a ready market disposed of them as fast as they were harvested.

• Corporal John R. Hartman, 18, of Watson was given the Silver Star posthumously at a service held in the Memorial Building Monday evening. Corporal Hartman was killed in action in Korea on September 10, 1950. His citation read, in part: “Corp. John R. Hartman, a member of Company E, 5th cavalry regiment, manned a recoil rifle and delivered effective fire upon infiltrating enemy forces near Waegwan, Korea. Although the enemy concentrated their fire upon his weapon, Corporal Hartman courageously refused to withdraw and died at his post. His gallant sacrifice and exemplary devotion to duty greatly contributed to delaying the enemy attack and enabled his company to withdraw safely.”

• Mrs. W.R. Strickland reports that a large swarm of bees has taken possession of one of the columns of her front porch.

July 22, 1976

• Lois Gaines of Rock Port was the recipient of a Bicentennial quilt from the Lone Cedar Club of Rock Port. The group sold 337 tickets.

• Unidentified foreign matter was placed in the oil tanks of two International diesel trucks belonging to the Atchison-Holt Electric Cooperative and two poles holding 69,000 volts of electric transmission wires were sawed July 15. The poles, located west of Trail’s End restaurant on Hwy. 136, were sawed with what was believed to be a chain saw. The trucks were located at the Rural Electric Cooperative in Rock Port.

• Greg Chamberlain was named outstanding regional police officer at Maryville for placing second in a firearm contest this spring. Chamberlain hit a target with 248 of 250 shots.

July 19, 2001

• There is a new siren and strobe light at the Rock Port Fire Department that will be activated by the firemen when they respond to a call. Both siren and strobe light will be activated from 5:00 a.m. to 12:00 midnight and just the strobe light from 12:00 a.m. to 5:00 a.m.

• Citizens Bank & Trust held its golf day July 10 at the Rock Port Golf Course. The proceeds of $1,082.75 were donated to the Atchison County Extension Center for the Don Mobley Show Arena. The team of Don Hendrix, June Jochim, Virg Watts, and Bob Phelps won the event with a score of 60.

• Rick and Lawna Bradley’s home at 708 S. Bluff Street is this month’s Yard of the Month, selected by the Rock Port Garden Club.

• Elmwood Cemetery has taken on a new look. JCJ Landscaping built retaining walls along the steep banks at the entry that should help with the erosion problems as well as beautify the cemetery.

• Steve and Brenda Scamman are celebrating the miracle return of their shelty dog Piston. Piston was taken to a Maryville, Missouri, vet clinic where he received surgery. During his recovery, he was taken outside for a walk and escaped. Twelve days later, after frantic searching, posting fliers, and making radio and newspaper announcements, the Scammans were contacted by a lady in Sheridan, Missouri. Piston had shown up at her home, around 25 miles from the vet clinic.
