A plaque, “Veterans of the American Revolution Who Once Resided in Clay County”, was recently updated and rededicated during a ceremony on Saturday, June 27, 2026, at the James S. Rooney Justice Center in Liberty, Missouri. The plaque was updated to add the name Ezra Cameron.

A plaque honoring veterans of the American Revolution who are buried in Clay County, Missouri, received an additional name in a rededication ceremony Saturday, June 27. The updated plaque, “Veterans of the American Revolution Who Once Resided in Clay County,” was rededicated and unveiled at 11:00 a.m. at the front of the James S. Rooney Justice Center in Liberty, Missouri.
Several descendants were present, along with Clay County and Liberty officials and members of the sponsors, William C. Corum Chapter, National Society Sons of the American Revolution (NSSAR), and the Alexander Doniphan Chapter, National Society Daughters of the American Revolution (NSDAR).
The original plaque had the names of 19 men who fought in the American Revolution and eventually made their way west to Clay County. They are buried in various cemeteries around the county. The name being added, Ezra Cameron, has a death certificate that states he died in Howard County. That was true when he died; however, the original Howard County subsequently was divided into 39 counties, including Clay County, where his burial site is now located. His descendant, Jerre (Johnson) Robertson of Platte City, Missouri, a member of the Alexander Doniphan Chapter of DAR, made the discovery while researching her ancestry. Robertson attended the ceremony along with Joni (Johnson) Graff of Braymer, Missouri, a 1976 graduate of Holt County R-II (Mound City) and member of the Alexander Doniphan Chapter of DAR. Ezra Cameron is the fifth great-grandfather of both Robertson and Graff.
The plaque was originally dedicated on October 12, 1996, by the William C. Corum Chapter NSSAR and the Alexander Doniphan Chapter NSDAR, both of Liberty. The two chapters decided it would be appropriate to update the plaque to honor Ezra Cameron along with the other patriots.
“It is so important to remember those who fought for our independence and provided the freedoms we enjoy today, and I’m glad my patriot’s name is on this plaque to be remembered along with the other men here,” Robertson said, “and it’s exciting to be doing this just before our nation’s 250th anniversary.”
