• Rock Port schools will start a new term next Monday, September 3, with three new teachers. Miss Barbara Sears will teach commerce, Norman Clouse will be the new music instructor, and Irwin Thomas will be teaching science.
• Rock Port’s Sorosis study club starts its 54th year September 5. Officers are: Mrs. H.O. Roberson, president; Mrs. Hauser Winter, vice-president; Mrs. Frank Heyen, secretary; Mrs. Henry Stapel, treasurer; and Mrs. Ralph James, critic.
• Mr. and Mrs. Everett Cloepfil of High Creek have purchased from Bliss Bailey lots on North Main lying between the Herbert Melvin and Mercer Burke homes. They plan to erect a modern one-story, five-room house.
• Private Louella L. King, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Jesse King, has completed six weeks of basic training in the women’s marine corps at Parris Island, South Carolina, and has been transferred to Camp LeJeune, North Carolina, for eight weeks of schooling.
September 3, 1976
• The Rock Port Blue Jays will open the 1976 football season Friday night when they travel to Stella, Nebraska, to face the Mustangs of Southeast. A great deal of responsibility for football success for the Blue Jays this fall rests on the shoulders of center Jeff Blasnitz and quarterback Jay Erdman.
• Simon Gift Shop, a store full of gifts, housewares, paints, and decorating items, will be named “This ’N That” when soon-to-be owners Mr. and Mrs. Elmer Davis take over October 1. Present owner George Simon plans to retire, but not completely. He is keeping the picture framing business, which will move to the garage of his home at 500 Kansas Street. Simon and his twin brother bought the store from Mr. Volkmann in 1945.
• A successful bike ride from Rock Port Rotary Bike-A-Thon August 29 on the hilly Highway 275 from Rock Port to Hamburg, Iowa, and back included 23 persons taking part. Twenty-two completed the 50-mile route, which raised more than $3,500 for the tennis courts in Rock Port. Jim Lewis was the first in.
• Mrs. Dorothy Brought was installed as president of the Ralph Greer American Legion Auxiliary Monday at the Coach House.

• The annual Rotary-sponsored “Meet the Teachers Picnic” was held at the Rock Port City Park Wednesday, August 22. Hamburgers and hot dogs were served to 115 people.
• The Rock Port R-II Board of Education voted to offer a school-based preschool starting in October.
• The victory bell that sits at the top of the hill at Blue Jay Stadium has now been hanging out in that spot for 30 years. The bell was donated by the Rock Port Fire Department in August 1971. The bell was originally the fire bell that was erected high on top of a wooden tower at city hall. When modern sirens were purchased, the tower was torn down and bell retired.
• Thirty years ago on Saturday, August 28, 1971, Blue Jay Bowl opened its doors. The Blue Jay Bowl owners were Dr. Jack Scamman and Duane Fentiman. It survived a fire in 1986.
• Aron and Joanna Burke of Rock Port are pleased to announce the birth of their son, Richard Alexander Burke, born August 23 at 7:30 p.m. He weighed 8 pounds, 12 1/2 ounces.
