We live in a world built around convenience. We bank online, pump our own gas and often choose restaurants where the food arrives quickly. Full-service businesses may be fading, but Jesus reminds us that a full-service life never goes out of style.
In Mark 10, James and John approach Jesus with an unusual request: “Teacher, we want you to do for us whatever we ask of you.” They want the best seats in Jesus’ kingdom – places of honor and influence.
Jesus responds by turning their request upside down, saying: “Whoever wishes to become great among you must be your servant.” Then He gives them His own life as an example, “For the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve.”
That changes the question we should ask each day. Instead of asking, “What can I get?” Jesus teaches us to ask, “What can I give?”
Serving others does not always require a grand gesture. It can be an encouraging word, a phone call to someone who is lonely, a helping hand, or simply making someone feel welcome. Small acts of kindness can remind people that they are seen, valued and loved.
The world may need fewer full-service banks, restaurants and gas stations. But it desperately needs more full-service people.
So this week, look around you. Notice someone who needs encouragement. Help someone who is struggling. Welcome someone who feels alone. Give your time, attention and love without expecting anything in return.
Then remember the words of Jesus: “The Son of Man came not to be served but to serve.” All of us should work to follow his example. Don’t wait to be served. Find someone you can serve.
