October 12, 1951

• Rock Port High School pep squad members got an unexpected treat last Friday afternoon while uptown going through a snake dance and rally preceding that evening’s football game with Sidney, Iowa. A former Rock Port resident, Loren McCoy of Shambaugh, Iowa, was in town and told the kids he would buy a treat for any of them who went to the Rock Port Fountain. Some 50 or 60 students got a treat at his expense.

• The new brick fronts of the two West business houses just south of the county library are nearing completion. The brickwork on the walls was completed Wednesday and workmen are now laying the bricks for the window frames.

• Virgil Watts is confined to his home with severe scalp and head wounds suffered shortly after seven last Friday morning when an accumulation of oil in one of the attachments at his place of business exploded. A ventilator sheet of iron flew out and hit Watts’ head.

October 14, 1976

• The Rock Port High School Homecoming King is Danny McMahon and Queen is Julie Jochim. The two were crowned before the Rock Port Blue Jays/Fairfax Bulldogs’ football game. The Blue Jays lost 0-20.

• Bud Husing of Rock Port was appointed District Deputy Grand Mastor of the eighth Masonic District, announced at the 155th Annual Communication of the Grand Lodge of Ancient, Free, and Accepted Masons in Kansas City. Husing has been a member of North Star Lodge 157 since 1967.

• Trail Boss Provisions, a retail and supply company for Trail’s End, is open for business. Trail Boss will sell institutional foods by the can or case, dry goods, paper products and meats.

• Showing at the Paramount Theatre in Rock Port: Burt Reynolds in “Gator” and Roy Scheider and Richard Dreyfuss in “Jaws.”

October 11, 2001

• The Rock Port Booster Club held a jersey auction, with Willie Holmes providing the auctioneering. The event raised $3,000.

• The Rock Port Optimist Club swore in new officers with the assistance of District Lt. Gov. George Richmond. New officers are: Bill Thomas, president; W.C. Farmer, vice-president; Richard Fentiman, treasurer; and Ron Hunter, secretary.

• The Rock Port High School Football Homecoming King and Queen were crowned. Curt Graham was crowned king and Melissa Herron was crowned queen. Chandler Farmer and Taya Lewis were the crownbearers. The Blue Jays won their football game against Princeton 69-0.

• Bartlett Grain Company, L.P., announced the acquisition of Genetic Seeds, Inc. and Stanton Grain Company of Rock Port. Stanton Grain Company has been in business since 1946. In 1979, Dan Stanton, Paul Zimmerman, and Donald Paul Stanton founded Genetic Seeds, Inc.

• Jim and Amy Skillen of Rock Port, Missouri, are pleased to announce the birth of their first child, a daughter, Darius Mercury Skillen. Darius was born October 6 at Community Hospital in Fairfax.

• Land recently purchased by the Binders south of Rock Port included the Lee Shoemaker home, which the Binders did not want. The Binders decided to donate the house to the Baptist Church in Big Lake and the home was recently hauled by a truck to its new location.
