Last week the Rock Port Elementary had some special visitors. For fire prevention week the volunteer fire department came and talked to the students about fire safety. The children got to learn about what firefighters do, see their fire trucks, and hear about the important way firefighters help our community. They met in the cafeteria and had a talk with local fireman W.C. Farmer. He talked with the kids about fire alarms and escape plans in case of an emergency. Fire chief Scott Jones and firemen Treyton Lewis, Kory Paris, and Steve Shineman were also involved. After talking to the kids everyone went outside to see the equipment and go on a firetruck ride. First grader Cord Davis said his favorite part of fire prevention week was “Going outside and looking at all the equipment and tools.”

Mrs. Ellis coordinates the event with the fire department. She states, “It raises awareness about common fire hazards, the importance of smoke alarms, and what to do if a fire breaks out.” When asked what the benefits of younger students learning about fire safety she states “These lessons help build confidence and awareness that can last a lifetime. Students of all ages benefit from talking about emergency situations to help them feel prepared, not scared.”

Dr. Waigand shares “The firefighters do a great job showing what they look and sound like with equipment on. They are the experts. They are great at showing and explaining the importance of their equipment. It gives the kids great interactions and important visuals.”

When planning the event every year, Mrs. Ellis hopes the students remember what to do in an emergency, riding the antique firetruck , the cool equipment, and of course, the classic fire safety video, The Smoke Detectives.
