A total of 869 farms were counted in Atchison County during the 1964 Census of Agriculture. In the previous Census of Agriculture (1959), the total in the county was 1,004 farms.
June 10, 1976
A huge 1,200 square foot sign is being considered by the Rock Port Chamber of Commerce for Interstate 29 to proclaim the existence of the city of Rock Port and invite travelers to turn off and visit Rock Port. Robert Lee Stanton presented the committee views indicating that the sign would be placed between the two exits on the east side of the Interstate up next to the bluffs.

Tarkio will be hosting the 1986 Continental Amateur Baseball Association Little League World Series. The 1986 Tournament will have eight to ten teams that qualify from all over the U.S. and Puerto Rico. All games will be played at Tarkio’s South City Park and the whole county has joined in to help with funding.

The Rock Port R-II School’s Board of Education met in a special session to discuss the building project which has been contemplated for several years. This plan would provide sufficient money to complete the building project. This would give us a new educational facility equipped to better prepare the graduates for the technology to find work. The second facility would be a new gym.

Atchison County could become the site of one of the largest wind farms in the United States. Community Energy, a Pennsylvania based renewable energy company, plans to erect as many as 200 wind turbines generating up to 400 megawatts of power – enough to power more than 100,000 homes. The company has acquired leases on 30,000 acres of land in Atchison County on which to build the farm.
