On Saturday, June 4, 2016, the Community Hospital-Fairfax Auxiliary, the Tarkio Police Department, Rock Port Police Department, and Atchison County Sheriff’s Department teamed up to hold an Atchison County Drug Take-Back Day. This event (sponsored by the Auxiliary and Sheriff’s Department) collected all unused or unwanted pharmaceuticals, including veterinary, prescribed, and over-the-counter drugs in Fairfax, Tarkio, and Rock Port.
This year, Atchison County brought in about 150 pounds of prescription and over-the-counter drugs. Rock Port collected 35 pounds, Fairfax collected between 35 and 40 pounds, and Tarkio contributed 80 pounds from Saturday’s event and from previous collections.
The Community Hospital-Fairfax Auxiliary and the Atchison County Sheriff’s Department are wanting to continue this rewarding project and plan to hold the event on the first Saturday of June every year.
When asked why it’s important to have the Drug Take-Back Day every year, Rose Munsey, a member of the auxiliary said, “This is a safe way to dispose of prescription and over-the-counter drugs without endangering the water supply.”
