The Brownville Concert Series is thrilled to bring back a Brownville favorite. Joe Cartwright returns featuring a new face, Molly Hammer and talent from the top spots in Kansas City. They will perform in cabaret Friday and Saturday, July 15 and 16, at 7:30 p.m. and in concert Sunday, July 17, at 2:00 p.m.
Joe Cartwright is “one of the brightest stars in the Kansas City Jazz firmament,” says Dr. Chuck Berg of JazzTimes Magazine. Cartwright is a pianist who has lived, performed, and taught in the Kansas City area for the last 30 years. He is a graduate of the UMKC Conservatory of Music. He leads his own duo, trio, and quartet, and is currently musical director for the critically acclaimed NPR radio show, 12th Street Jump. Joe has performed on and produced numerous recordings. He has been a featured performer with the Kansas City Symphony, the Kansas City Jazz Orchestra and the Independence Symphony, and his trio was featured in performance at the 1992 World’s Fair in Seville, Spain as representatives of Kansas City Jazz. In the spring of 2000, Cartwright toured the Middle East, Africa, India and Southeast Asia as a USIA Jazz Ambassador. In 2012, the Joe Cartwright Quartet was chosen to represent Kansas City Jazz at the CCPA Jazz Festival in Asuncion, Paraguay. When not performing and giving clinics, Joe composes, arranges and teaches jazz piano and theory.
Molly Hammer has been performing in the Kansas City area since 2005. With an eclectic vocal background, she has found her home in the world of jazz and blues, drawing inspiration from the likes of Peggy Lee, Dinah Washington, Sara Vaughn, and many others. She has had the privilege of performing with some of the finest jazz musicians in the Kansas City area. You can hear her regularly at The Green Lady Lounge, The Phoenix, The Broadway Jazz Club, 12 Baltimore, and Chaz. She can also be seen and heard at one of the many Unity Churches in the area nearly every Sunday. Molly is a graduate of the Artist INC program and has also had the honor of singing the national anthem for both The Royals and The Chiefs. In 2015, Molly performed with the nationally syndicated radio show 12th Street Jump and Jazz in the Woods.
