Congressman Jerry Litton and his family were killed Tuesday night when their plane crashed on take-off at the airport in Chillicothe after he won the nomination to be the Democratic candidate in the November general election for U.S. senator. The plane left Chillicothe around 9 p.m. and was to take them to Kansas City.

The Rock Port Volunteer Fire Department responded to an alarm on July 26, when a car owned by Garth Green caught fire at the Rock Port City Park because of wiring. Firemen at the scene were Ron Bradley, Gregg Groff, Harold Perry, Mark Hull, Mike Leisman, Duane Smith and Rocky Evans.

Abie Showalter from Craig, Mo, was chosen as 1996 Atchison County Fair Parade Grand Marshall. Abie has been a long time supporter of the Atchison County Fair, volunteering as auctioneer for every livestock auction since they began in 1966, except one.

On July 25 Nebraska Public Power District’s nuclear personnel and fire brigade responded to an alarm that indicated a possible fire on site at the utility’s Cooper Nuclear Station near Brownville. Smoke from a welding activity taking place in Cooper’s service water pump room caused an alarm to sound in the plant’s control room. The station’s fire brigade found that there was only smoke, not fire.
