Billy G. VanGundy, 90, Fairfax, Missouri, passed away October 15, 2016.
Bill was born August 29, 1926, at the VanGundy family farm near the community of Milton, Missouri. He was the youngest of five children born to Clemon and Lucile (Martin) VanGundy. He grew up in that community and attended school in Milton until eighth grade, when he began attending school in Fairfax.
During Bill’s junior year in high school, he enlisted in the United States Navy. He served with the Seabees during World War II.
On December 30, 1951, Bill was united in marriage to Nancy C. Oswald and they began their almost 65 years of married life together on a farm near the Atchison-Holt county line. They later moved to a farm closer to Fairfax, just east of the Big Tarkio River, where Bill continued to engage in farming. Bill and Nancy became the parents of two children, their daughter Bridget, and their son Bruce.
In 1976, Bill and Nancy moved into Fairfax. Bill passed away at Pleasant View Nursing Home in Rock Port, Missouri, after a period of declining health.
He is survived by his wife, Nancy, of the home; daughter, Bridget, and husband Don Wennihan, Craig, Missouri; son, Bruce, Fairfax; grandchildren, Trisha and husband Jamie Quimby, Benjamin Simmons, Jessica VanGundy, and Emily VanGundy; great-grandchildren, Kaleigh and Lauren Quimby and Blake Simmons; and sisters, Frances Millsap, Rock Port, and Dorothy Cooper, Auburn, Nebraska.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Virginia Rhoades; and a brother, Dick VanGundy.
Bill was a member of the Fairfax United Methodist Church, John Richards Post #284 American Legion, and Elks Lodge #963, Falls City, Nebraska, where he was a 50-year member.
Graveside services and burial were held Wednesday, October 19, 2016, at Pleasant Ridge Cemetery near Fairfax, conducted by Rev. Andrew Sanders.
Memorials may be directed to Fairfax United Methodist Church. Services were under the direction of Schooler Funeral Home, Fairfax.
