The annual health fair was held Wednesday, October 12, at Fairfax R-3 School. Students from pre-kindergarten through 12th grade participated.
The screenings began with students getting their height and weight measured and recorded by Cheryl Chastain, R.N. Dr. David Scarbrough was at the second station performing dental screens. He was assisted by Mandy Smith.
Students pre-kindergarten through 6th grade who had parents’ permission then proceeded to the fluoride station where fluoride was applied by Beth Graves and Tammy Grossman, LPN.
All students visited the next two informational stations which were presented by Shala Davidson, dietician with Community Hospital-Fairfax, and Sam O’Riley, YPA, with MU Extension. Shala did a visual presentation on the comparison of sugar content in sugared drinks and gave information on energy drinks. Sam presented information on poison control and gave the students magnets or coloring books.
Sara Bix from Wal-Mart Vision Center was on hand again this year to do vision screens. She was assisted by Tracy Oswald.
John Brown and Kala Richey from the Atchison-Holt Ambulance District recorded students’ blood pressure and heart rate.
Some students were not in attendance and will be screened within the next few weeks by the school nurse.
Tammy Grossman, school nurse, thanked all of the volunteers, the teachers, Alicia Straub, Jared Dowis, and the Hi-Step/TNT students. “The health fair could not be successful without their time and dedication,” she said.
Jay Stanton, DPT, and Kelsi Holthus, OT, from Community Hospital-Fairfax, visited Fairfax R-3 School Wednesday, October 19. They performed scoliosis screens on students in fifth through eighth grades. Fairfax R-3 appreciates all volunteers and values their connection with the community.
