Mary Louise Knudson, 82, of Kansas City, passed away Oct. 24, 2016. She was born Dec. 5, 1933, in St. Joseph to the late Lester and Wahnita (Viets) Daniels.
Mary Lou grew up in the St. Joseph area where she met Jerry Knudson, whom she later married. During their marriage, Mary Lou and Jerry were stationed at various bases including: San Diego Naval Base, Calif.; Pensacola Naval Base, Fla.; Houston Space Center, Texas and Norfolk Naval Base, Va. After Jerry retired from the Navy, the couple settled in Kansas City, where Mary Lou worked and then retired from Kmart.
Mary Lou was a devoted wife, mother, and daughter. At various times over the years, she was the primary caregiver for her husband, son, mother, step-father, and mother-in-law. She and her husband raised his grandnephew, and saw him through his high school graduation. Mary also opened her home to relatives and friends whenever they needed help.
During her later years, Mary resided at Maple Wood Care Center in Kansas City. She enjoyed socializing with the residents and staff there, reading magazines, reading correspondence from relatives, and watching television. Mary was delighted that her cousin David took her to her Aunt Evelyn Viets’ 90th birthday party in 2010 in Rock Port, Mo. She enjoyed talking with relatives there and celebrating a milestone with her aunt.
Mary Lou was preceded in death by her parents; her step-father, Clifford R. Graves; her husband, Jerry W. Knudson, a Navy veteran of Korea and Vietnam and her son, Larry D.W. Knudson, an Army veteran.
Survivors include cousins: David Viets and wife, Patricia, Waldorf, Md.; Betty Goad, Watson, Mo.; Phillip Viets and wife, Linda, Watson, Mo.; Charles Viets and wife, Rebecca, Tarkio, Mo.. and numerous second cousins.
Graveside services will be held Friday, Nov. 4, 2016, at 11:00 a.m. in St. Joseph Memorial Park, 5005 Frederick Ave, St Joseph, MO 64506. Online condolences may be left at:
