Due to limitations created by the annual recertification of all forms of higher education in Missouri at the Department of Higher Education, and in consultation with Tarkio College, the last stage of certification, the site inspection with consultants, has been rescheduled for early in 2017.
Tarkio College President Bob Hughes has indicated that this was a mutual decision designed to assure a fair and proper inspection and evaluation. “Our goal is to have Tarkio College established on a solid foundation. We plan to take this added time to push our fundraising efforts and to complete additional capital renovations. After 25 years of planning, this rescheduling will not harm our plans or objectives.
Tarkio College has benefitted from the dissolution of the Farragut School System in Farragut, Iowa. The State of Iowa moved to dissolve the school system and to disperse the student body to other districts. The Shenandoah School District was left with the buildings in Farragut and they engaged Sunshine Auctioneers to sell the contents of the school. Dr. Karri Nelson, Superintendent of the Shenandoah School District, indicated that the auction was held to assure that school district property was made available to the public and found a useful purpose. President Hughes, along with Dr. John Fisher and board member Don Jagger, attended the auction and bid on fixtures and furniture. The results netted student tables and chairs for all classrooms at Tarkio College, an advanced computer laboratory, smart boards, library shelving, tables, office desks, chairs and computer equipment. In total, about $40,000 in fixtures and furniture was acquired for less than $3,000.
