The regular meeting of the Tarkio R-I Board of Education was held Thursday, October 20, 2016, in the board meeting room at Tarkio High School. The meeting was called to order by President Steve Klute with everyone reciting the Pledge of Allegiance at 7:00 p.m. Board members present were Chris Yates, Corey Lesher, Jamie Barnett, Lydia Hurst, Bruce Lang, Rachel Graves, and Diane Hicks, board secretary. Others attending were: Tarkio Elementary Principal Dr. Deborah Taylor, Tarkio High School Principal Carrie Livengood, Administrative Assistant HT Adams, Interim Superintendent Bruce Skog­lund, Interim Superintendent Rob Dowis, Gretchen Garrett, Amy Haddock, Amanda Powell, Kerri Wilson, Glenn Scott, Beverly Hannah, Sam Hannah, Afton Hannah, Shannon Bruns, Lisa Yates, Jamie DeRosier, Jamie Morton, Nathan Morton, Connie Hall, Laura Brooks, Maggie Ramirez, Amy Weidenaar, and Pamela Porter.
Minutes from the September 22, 2016, and October 13, 2016, meetings were approved. The board members also approved the transfer of incidental funds to pay special revenue to pay certificated salaries. The consent agenda was also approved, as well as district obligations.
Citizens comments were heard regarding parents’ concern about a student’s behavior.
The CTA Report was given. Dr. Taylor introduced Ms. Amanda Powell (5th grade teacher) and Mrs. Wilson (4th grade teacher) to the board and guests. Ms. Powell introduced herself and discussed several items the 5th graders are working on. Mrs. Wilson introduced herself and talked about the 4th grade activities. Mrs. Livengood introduced music teacher Amy Haddock and science teacher Gretchen Garrett. Mrs. Haddock introduced herself and talked about the music activities. Mrs. Garrett introduced herself and spoke about the course of study within her science classes.
Discussing the budget, Mr. Skoglund projected revenues. Follow-up questions were asked about the alternative school option.
Mr. Adams stated the ad for the bids for the new ag building was to run through the 28th. Midwest Data continues to improve the technology and speakers for the district. Mr. Adams reported the chair lift is complete and in working order.
Dr. Deborah Taylor stated that enrollment is at 121 with an attendance rate of 98%. She reported the elementary parent teacher conferences’ were very well attended.
Mrs. Livengood was very positive about the parent teacher conferences. She reported several teachers had assisted in calling parents to invite them to attend.
Rob Dowis gave an update on food service. Bruce Skoglund discussed the finance report, year end balance, and auditors’ request for information. Steve Klute had been in contact with Dr. Mike Jinks, MARE representative, in regards to the superintendent search. Dr Jinks will be in the district on November 4th to review applications with the Board of Education. The interview process is to begin the week of November 7, 2016.
The meeting moved into closed session at 7:46 p.m. for the purpose of discussing personnel 610.003, student discipline issues 610.006, and auditor’s recommendations 610.017. The meeting returned to open session at 10:15 p.m. The board voted to offer a temporary support staff letter of intent to Regina Gillenwater. The meeting was adjourned at 10:20 p.m.
