“A once in a lifetime experience.”
~Ted Harmon
On Saturday, December 3, 2016, Ted Harmon traveled to Waco, Texas to participate in a hunt for Fallow Deer and Scimitar Horned Oryx at the Spirit of the Wild Ranch. If the name of the ranch sounds somewhat familiar it’s because it is owned and operated by Ted Nugent, who also has his own TV show called “Spirit of the Wild”. After finding out the details of his hunting trip, Harmon said “Besides meeting and marrying my wife this is the luckiest thing that has happened to me.”
The Fallow Deer is a common species, native to western Eurasia, but has been introduced to both Canada and the United States. According to Wikipedia, the Scimitar-Horned Oryx has been extinct in the wild since 2000. This spiral-horned antelope formerly inhabited all of North Africa.
Harmon started his hunt on Sunday, December 4 and it continued through to Wednesday, December 7. Harmon said, “The Fallow Deer have been poached to almost annihilation in South Africa but there are several hunting ranches in Texas that home many Fallow Deer.” When asked about the hunting experience with Ted Nugent he stated, “If we had more folks like him, we’d be a lot better off.” There was a break in hunting as the group accompanied Nugent to a school where he spoke to students about making something of themselves along with educating them on the NRA, their gun rights and their constitutional rights. Before traveling home, Harmon and some of the other hunters attended a dinner held at Nugent’s home where they enjoyed a meal with Nugent and his wife and then were entertained later on that evening by Nugent and his guitar.
