The Nutrition Center in Tarkio is a happening place for the adult population in Atchison County. Located at 412 Main Street in Tarkio, the doors are open from 6 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday through Friday. There’s always a cup of coffee to be had each morning while locals catch up on the latest gossip, lunch to be enjoyed, or a game of pool or board game to play or puzzle to put together. The center also holds bingo on Thursday evenings (bingo won’t be held again until February due to the winter weather). Lunch is served from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Around 100 people enjoy the Nutrition Center’s services each day, with 50 of those having meals delivered to them and the other 50 coming into the center to enjoy food and conversation. Local organizations also use the facility to hold meetings and dinners.
All of the center’s fun goings-on is under the direction of Administrator Julie Buhman, who began her managerial duties at the Nutrition Center in August of 2016. Before that, Julie had worked as a cook at the local school district and then as head cook at the Nutrition Center. Julie is in charge of the bookwork, inventory, seeing to deadlines, billing, purchasing, payroll, and grant work, as well as helping to manage a staff of six and a number of volunteers. Volunteers, which also include local club members and businessmen and women, help deliver meals, serve food, and work in the kitchen. There is even a high school student who comes into the center each morning before school to help set the tables for that day’s meal. Julie said volunteers are always welcome and she encourages anyone wanting to help out to stop by and talk to her.
The Nutrition Center is looking forward to an upcoming fundraising meal, sponsored by the St. Paul’s Catholic Church Altar Society. The spaghetti dinner will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. on Friday, February 10, 2017. Free will donations will be accepted, with all proceeds going to the Nutrition Center.
Julie says she loves her job and encourages anyone seeking food, fun and fellowship to stop by the Nutrition Center.
