Fairfax FCCLA Chapter sends two teams on to state Star Events this coming March. Ten out of eighteen members competed in regional Star Events on the Northwest campus on January 25, 2017. There were fifty different individuals and groups participating in the day’s events from Northwest Missouri in twenty one different competitive areas. Area advisors, adults and student volunteers helped with the evaluation process throughout the day.
This year’s Fairfax participants were: seniors Audrae Bates and Caitlyn O’Riley with sophomore Kinley Thornhill in the category of “Chapter Service Project Portfolio,” which received a silver; sophomores Chaos Powers and Shelbey Morris with freshman Morgan O’Riley in the category of “Chapter in Review Portfolio,” also receiving a silver; sophomores Makya Carroll and Destany Theas earned a top gold and will be moving on to state in the “Focus on Children” category; and in “Food Innovation” the Fairfax chapter will be sending freshmen McKenzie Frohn and Jaelynn Hill on to state for their top gold achievement. Senior Goldie Barnes also prepared a Star Event in the Recycle Redesign category, but was unable to compete due to illness.
Evaluating this year’s competition were advisor Mrs. Million, Mrs. Virginia Vernon of Fairfax, and FCCLA student Shanna Gilpin. This year’s state competition will be held at the Tan-Tar-A resort at the Lake of the Ozarks March 19-21, 2017. The four will be competing against other regions in the state of Missouri for an opportunity to advance to the national level. l
