Rock Port opened their regular season at DeKalb with a 72-8 win. The Jays made short work of the Tigers, scoring with 9:35 left on the clock in the first quarter, with a 45 yard pass from quarterback Jase Hughes to receiver Caden Linthicum. Hughes scored the point after touchdown. The Jays’ defense came up big when Quentin Carder recovered a fumble and took it to the house for a 24 yard touchdown, followed by Carder with the two point conversion, making it 16-0 with 6:24 left on the clock. Hughes then connected with Ryan Dewhirst for a 37 yard touchdown and Carder punched in the PAT giving the Jays a 24-0 lead. DeKalb had their only touchdown and PAT with :36 left in the first quarter making it 24-8. With only :14 seconds left on the clock, Hughes hit Linthicum for a 45 yard touchdown, Hughes with the extra point ending the first quarter 32-8.
The Jays didn’t let up as Carter Ottmann intercepted the ball giving  Rock Port a short field. With 11:26 on the clock Quentin Carder hit pay dirt and Hughes scored the PAT making it 40-8. Following a defensive stand Brock Martin took a handoff from quarterback Jase Hughes for a 14 yard touchdown run. Gavin Abbott put two more points on the board making the score 48-8. Carder added his third touchdown on the night with an interception and return for a touchdown and extra point, making the score 56-8. The JV offense took over with Alex Burke at quarterback hitting Aaron Lawrence for a 15 yard touchdown pass and run. Burke capped it off with a two point conversion, giving the Jays a 64 – 8 lead over the Tigers. The final score came with 1:16 left on the clock when quarterback Alex Burke had an 11 yard run, followed by a two point conversion by freshman Joey Herron. This ended the game with a final score 72-8.
The Jays will take on Platte Valley at home Friday night. Platte Valley comes to Rock Port 0-1 after losing 6-56 against Mound City.
Total offensive yards were 224 and the Jays held the Tigers to a total of 69 yards. Leading tacklers were: Gavin Abbott 8, Ryan Dewhirst 5, Quentin Carder 4, Dalton Brake 4, Joey Herron 4, Dalton Stevens 3, Kalen LaHue 3, and Aaron Lawrence 3. Interceptions were made by Carter Ottmann, Quentin Carder and Trey Peshek. There was one fumble recovery by Quentin Carder.
