Rock Port traveled to Stewartsville to take on the Cardinals last Friday night.
Junior Brock Martin set the tone for the game as he took the opening kick-off back for a touchdown. This was the beginning of a 70-6 win over Stewartsville.
Following the kick-off, the defense pushed the Cardinals back to their own 24 yard line forcing them to punt the ball.
Caden Linthicum caught the punt and took it back for a touchdown that was called back for a penalty. Seven plays and two penalties later, senior quarterback Jase Hughes would hit senior receiver Linthicum for the second touchdown on the night. The two point conversion from Jase Hughes to senior end Ryan Dewhirst was good.
The Jays, defense came through again as Martin picked off a pass to give Rock Port the ball deep in Cardinal territory. Two plays later Hughes connected up with Dewhirst for six. Hughes, on a keeper, took the ball in for the two point conversion. This would end the first quarter 24-0.
After an offensive series that was plagued with penalties, the Jays attempted a fake punt giving the Cardinals the ball deep in our territory opening the door for their only touchdown on the night.
After a re-kick the Jays would get the ball at mid field and four plays later Hughes would hand off to Junior runningback Gavin Abbott for six points and the two point conversion.
The Cardinals, with ball on the 11 yard line, had a bad handoff and sophomore Kalen LaHue recovered the fumble. The next play from line of scrimmage, Hughes handed off to senior runningback Quentin Carder for six and the two point conversion by Hughes was good, making the score 40-6.
The Jays came up with a big defensive stand as the Cardinals moved the ball down to the 10 yard line before taking over on downs. Three plays later, with two runs by Carder and a pass to Dewhirst, the Jays added another six points to the board. The two point conversion to Dewhirst was good.
Things didn’t slow down on the next defensive stand as defensive end Dewhirst caught the ball off of the helmet of a Stewartsville receiver and took it back for six. Hughes would keep it on the two point conversion. The score was now 56-6.
Hughes would connect up with Linthicum for another touchdown and Carder’s two point conversion was good, giving the Jays a 64-6 lead.
The junior varsity offense ended the game with a hand-off from sophomore quarterback Alex Burke to freshman running back Joey Herron, who took it 22 yards to the house. The two point conversion was no good ending the game 70-6.
