Two Tarkio teenagers were injured when the 1986 Yamaha Moto4 ATV they were riding on crashed on Maple Street in Blanchard at the state line September 24, 2017, at 12:42 p.m. The accident occurred when Lexi M. Somerville, 15, of Tarkio was driving the ATV westbound on Maple Street. The vehicle traveled off of the south side of the roadway and struck a utility pole causing both Somerville and occupant Jamie C. Hendrix, 17, of Tarkio to be ejected. The ATV continued and came to rest off of the south side of the roadway, on its wheels, facing southwest. Somerville, who was not wearing a safety device, received serious injuries and was transported to Shenandoah Medical Center in Shenandoah, Iowa, by an Atchison-Holt Ambulance. Hendrix, who was not wearing a safety device, received minor injuries and was transported to Community Hospital-Fairfax in Fairfax, Missouri, by a private party.
The accident was investigated by Cpl. M. R. Heits, who was assisted by Atchison County Sheriff’s Department, the Westboro Fire Department, and the Atchison-Holt Ambulance.
