On the windiest day of the year, the pitch club gathered at my home on the hill. Margie O’Riley came to our rescue, substituting for us. After putting the quarter in the pot, we gathered munchies and the battles began, losers to the low table per usual. I avoided getting low again thanks to my partner coming up with the all-important three whenever I was forced to take the bid. That was Margie O’Riley who kept it up until we made the high table. However we didn’t stay very long. The champion was JANELL MCQUINN who requested I put her name in capital letters on this exceptional occasion. The second high score was a tie between Merylan Lowrey and Mary Anne Pennel. Norma Bradfield won low, but enjoyed the caramel puff corn snacks. I was hostess and experimented with a pumpkin cheesecake recipe that everyone managed to enjoy between rounds of laughter.
It seems it’s difficult to find a suitable formal gown for the senior group. However everyone had suggestions and offers of where such items could be found, including their closets. Seems you can only wear a formal once. Then the fashion of jeans with tears and holes came up and it was a unanimous decision that we would not waste money buying them, fashionable or not. Then the talk went to TV shows that feature scantily clad figures. I think “Dancing with the Stars” was mentioned. I couldn’t comment. I watch detective stories. We had a lot of input from everyone, mostly hee-haws, but we had the formal gown situation settled when it was time to brave that wicked wind again. By the way, I now know where the best thrift shops are in St. Joseph.
