More people than the town’s population gathered at the Fairfax school gym Saturday morning to hear the children’s choir from Ukraine. The State Highway Patrolman who were present for the concert said there were around 700 people in the gym, but local people thought there were 900. They sang folk songs from their country and received several standing ovations.
“Over the Backfence by Nancy Gaines” in regards to the choir members, remarked: “The kids go to school year round. They liked stuffed olives. They laughed when given bumper stickers…They don’t drive. Gas there costs $1 a liter.”

Enough fat has been turned in by Atchison County housewives since December 15, 1942, to fire 6,384 anti-tank shells of 37 m.m. size. Glycerine is extracted from waste fats. Other explosives which might be made from the glycerine extracted from the 2,800 pounds of fat collected in Atchison County are: 1,400 pounds of dynamite; 140 pounds of nitroglycerine; 3,640 pounds of smokeless powder used in heavy artillery ammunition; and approximately 1,050 pounds of synthetic resin. This same amount of fat would also produce enough glycerin to paint 48 medium tanks.
