The East Atchison Spring Athletic Banquet was held Tuesday, May 22, 2018, at the Tarkio Community Building. The athletes who participated in high school boys’ and girls’ track, baseball, and boys’ golf were honored at the banquet.
Athletic Director Joe Unternharer welcomed all in attendance. The invocation was given before everyone enjoyed a delicious meal catered by Torrey Pines with extras brought by attendees.
Mr. Unternahrer got the awards portion of the event going by recognizing this year’s girls’ track team. Team members included (EA symbolizes letter winners): Tawni Martin EA, Madison Ohrt EA, Selena Somerville, Hannah Brown, Lily Graves EA, Kaely Kirwan EA, Madison Lesher, Grace Martin EA, Cat Prater, Kinley Thornhill, Jaycee Graves EA, Jesse Graves EA, Dixie Hendrix, Anna Klute, Harley Caudill EA, Cheyenne Gray EA, Brianna Maxwell EA, Autumn Murry EA, Mercedes Parshall EA, Morgan Parshall EA, Brynnan Poppa EA, Ella Rolf EA, and Allison Yates EA. The Lady Wolves placed 3rd in the 275 Conference Meet and several girls qualified for Class 1 State Track this season: Kaely Kirwan placed 8th in the Pole Vault (8’6”); 4×800 Meter Relay (Mercedes Parshall, Brynnan Poppa, Grace Martin, and Tawni Martin) placed 7th with a time of 10:34.17; Allison Yates placed 9th in the Pole Vault (8’3”); and Madison Ohrt placed 11th in the Javelin (105’9”). Though Jaycee Graves didn’t make it to state, she did qualify for Sectionals in the Shot Put with with a 4th place finish at Districts (32’6”).
Coach Aaron Behrens recognized this year’s boys’ track team. Team members included (EA symbolizes letter winners): Shae DeRosier EA, Wyatt Gray EA, Gage McAdams EA, Garrett Meyer EA, Wyatt Burke EA, Briacin Bywater EA, Trey Bowling EA, Gus Hurst EA, Jake McEnaney EA, Hunter Bennett, and Ian Hedlund EA. The Wolves placed 2nd in the 275 Conference Meet and a few boys competed in the Class 1 State Track Meet: Gage McAdams was named the State Champion in Pole Vault after breaking the Class 1 state record with a vault of 15’1/4” (this is also a new Tarkio High School record with Gage breaking his own record the last few years); Gage also competed in the high jump placing 10th (6’); Briacin Bywater placed 5th in the 300 Meter Hurdles with a time of 41.94 and 9th in the 110 Meter Hurdles with a time of 16.41; and Jake McEnaney placed 9th in the 1600 Meter Run with a time of 4:46.68. Jake also competed in the 800 Meter Run at Sectionals placing 5th with a time of 2:12.41, just missing out on qualifying for State.
Coach Terry Wooten recognized this year’s boys’ golf team members (EA symbolizes letter winners): Shane Wallace EA, Jimi Elder EA, Zach Sapp EA, and Kaden Cooper EA.
Coach Casey Martin recognized this year’s baseball team members (EA symbolizes letter winners): Trey Agnew EA, Andrew Gibbons EA, Dylan Jeffords EA, Colin Joesting EA, Tyler Brown EA, Zach Garrison EA, Max Hopkins EA, Gage McAdams EA, Jayce Navin, Hunter Tunnell, Austin Anderson EA, Gus Hurst EA, Jake McEnaney EA, Keaton Williams EA, Devin Guajardo, Manager Wyatt Driskell, and Bat Boy Quin Staten. Individual baseball awards were also handed out to: Gage McAdams – Offensive MVP, Keaton Williams – Defensive MVP, Dylan Jeffords – Wolf Award, Max Hopkins – Most Improved, Jake McEnaney – True Grit/Leadership Award, and Quin Staten – Team MVP. Coach Martin also recognized Coach Michael Hollingsworth who is leaving the team after 5 years (he will be a principal at a neighboring school next year). Coach Hollingsworth has been a driving force for the team and a coach the team members looked up to each year. He will be greatly missed.
Individual scholarships and awards were also handed out to the athletes and those who support them. Casey Martin presented the M. David Palmeiro Scholarship to Shae DeRosier. The Hogue family presented the Bruce Hogue Memorial Scholarship to Lauren Quimby. Lauren also received the Duke Nuckolls Memorial Scholarship, presented by Melody Barnett. Lydia Hurst recognized this year’s Booster of the Year, Janene McEnaney. Awards to Booster Families of the Year were also presented to Sam and Afton Hannah and family and Tracy and Josh Oswald and family.
Joe Unternahrer recognized Shae DeRosier and Madison Ohrt, as Senior Athletes who have participated and excelled in many sports over their four years of high school. They’ve also been recognized over the years for maintaining their grades while playing sports and being team leaders.
Mr. Unternahrer then closed the ceremony. Congratulations to all athletes and boosters!
