The Missouri Deptment of Conservation (MDC) will host a Loess Hill Timber and Prairie Field Day on May 12, 2018, at the McCormack Conservation Area south of Loess Bluffs Wildlife Refuge on Hwy. 159 starting at 10 a.m. The Loess Hills of Holt and Atchison Counties are a unique geographic landmark, and are home to Missouri’s only dry land prairies. MDC Foresters will provide advice and take participants on a walk through the timber in the morning. Information on proper timber management including timber stand improvement, sales and how to obtain a forest stewardship plan will be covered with plenty of time for questions. The afternoon section will focus on loess hill prairie restoration. A walking tour will cover work that has been accomplished on the land. Discussions on the benefits and problems associated with restoration will be covered. Other topics will be cost share opportunities for both timber and prairie. Lunch will be provided by MDC and the hamburgers and sausages will be grilled by Jim Pierson, Private Land Conservationist (Atchison, Holt & Nodaway Counties). For more information and to RSVP please contact Jim Pierson, at 660-442-3173 ext. 114.
