Spring has merged into summer and the hot days have become long. That is why many hunters and fisherman choose to recreate after dark during the summer months. To many, fishing season is underway here in Atchison County. Did you know that there are still species that can be hunted during summer? Believe it or not, there are still animals that can be hunted this time of year.
Bullfrog and greenfrog season opens at sunset on June 30, 2018. That’s right, sunset. The daily limit is 8, both species in the aggregate. A hunter may have 16 in possession. Frog legs are a southern delicacy when prepared properly. Many Missourians hunt and fish for them each year.
Frogs are unique to Missouri’s wildlife code. Frogs are one of the only animals that can be taken under a fishing permit or a small game hunting permit. The method being used to get the game determines what permit is necessary. For example, if you are shooting bullfrogs and greenfrogs with a .22 caliber rifle, then a small game hunting permit is required. If you are using a pole and line to catch bullfrogs or greenfrogs, then a fishing permit is required.
Whichever method you choose to use during frog season, please make sure you are safe while doing it. Also, be sure to check the regulations for the specific conservation area you plan to visit. Some areas have different regulations than others. Be sure to utilize both the MO Hunt app and the MO Fish app to your advantage when learning about conservation area regulations.
