Did you know that many of the children that receive free or reduced-price lunches at school may spend long, hungry hours trying to get through the weekends, when meals may not be available? Each child that is enrolled in Backpack Buddies, the supplemental weekend food program of Second Harvest Community Food Bank, receives a healthy breakfast, lunch and snack each weekend during the school year. Last year, there were over 3,500 children from 18 counties and over 50 schools, Head Start or after-school programs participating in Backpack Buddies through Second Harvest.
The Backpack Buddies program needs YOU in order to serve healthy foods to our Fairfax community children every weekend. It costs $175 to support one child for a full year in the Backpack Buddies program…but any size donation is welcome! For this 2018-19 school year, we are still signing kids up so we do not have an exact count at this time. Watch for updates in the coming months.
Please donate in one of two ways:
1. Donate by check made payable to Second Harvest, please write “Fairfax MO Backpack Buddies” on the memo line and mail your donation to: Second Harvest Community Food Bank, 915 Douglas Street, St. Joseph, MO 64505.
2. Make the check payable to Fairfax UMC and memo it “Backpack Buddies” and drop it off at the church or mail to: Fairfax UMC, PO Box 318, Fairfax MO 64446. We will forward all monies received to Second Harvest.
If you make your check out to Second Harvest and can’t find their address, don’t worry. Just give your check to Fairfax UMC and we will get it sent to them.
Thank you so much in advance! Our community has been terrific in its support of this program since it started being offered here at Fairfax R-3.
