The Watson Quilters began in 2003 as a “night out for the girls” who liked to quilt.

The group has ladies from Watson, Rock Port, and Hamburg, Iowa, and from all church denominations. They meet on Thursday nights at the Watson Community Building at 6:00 p.m.

The group started out just sharing quilt patterns, showing their quilts, making some together, and then drawing names out of a hat for winners.

The group soon began making throws for “shut- ins.” Since then, they have made many quilts for benefits in Watson, Rock Port, and Hamburg. Quilts were made for “after prom” for both Hamburg and Rock Port. They made throws for everyone at the Pleasant View Nursing Home one year, and Mrs. Santa and her helpers passed them out. One year they made 80 quilts for underprivileged children for Christmas. Possibly, the most quilts they have made have been for soldiers and veterans.

“We have never made a quilt and charged someone for it. We are a group that have similar talents, and I believe we have helped out our community by donating our quilts to good causes,” said Tammy Oakes.
