East Atchison traveled to Stanberry, Missouri, to take on the top-ranked Bulldogs Friday, October 12, 2018. Given the wet weather the last week or two, the field conditions were less the ideal. Water was standing everywhere.

EA won the toss and elected to receive the ball. Making short work of a long field, quarterback, Jake McEnaney hit receiver Gage McAdams off a post route. McAdams took it to the end zone giving the Wolves the first six points on the board. The PAT was good making the score 8-0.  The Bulldogs were quick to answer with a long run. The PAT was no good making the score 8-6 EA. The Wolves’ Kaylin Merriweather would take the hand-off 30 plus yards for a touchdown. The PAT was good making the score 14-6, ending the first quarter.

Stanberry would answer back at the start of the second quarter, bringing the score to 14-12, EA leading with 11:49 left in the second quarter. As the game went along, rain moved in and the field turned into a mud pit, making it difficult for both teams to get their footing. Stanberry was able to hold the Wolves and take over on downs. The Bulldogs took advantage and put another six points on the board, bringing the score to 14-18 Stanberry. This would take them to halftime.

Defense was the name of the game the second half. EA came through with several stops, taking over on downs. A big defensive stand came at 6:25 in the third quarter when Stanberry was pinned deep following a holding penalty, tried a quick pitch which was broken up and recovered by defensive lineman Wyatt Gray in the end zone. This would give the Wolves the lead, 20-18.

With 6:30 left in the fourth quarter, Stanberry would score again and miss the two point conversion, giving the lead back to the Bulldogs 20-24. In the final seconds of the game, Stanberry would try to score again, but the Wolves defense held strong and they would take over on downs. In the last minute, the Wolves’ would try to put a passing game together, but came up short, ending the game 20-24 giving Stanberry the win.

This Friday is East Atchison’s Senior Parents’ Night, with the game being played in Tarkio against Platte Valley.
