A certain prominent Hamburg farmer, Roy Carpenter by name, always had the ambition to catch a sizzling forward pass on the football field or hear a baseball smack into a glove and hear the umpire shout, “out at first base.” Roy was always too busy raising bumper crops of corn and feeding a lot of fat cattle and hogs to have much time for such sports. On Armistice Day Roy went duck hunting up near Riverton with L. J. Baker and Clarence Mooney, and on that day he achieved his lifetime ambition, that is , with a few exceptions. That which he caught was not a football nor a baseball, but he did catch a nice fat duck squarely in his hands, and there was no fumbling about the matter either. The three men were standing in the blind, waiting for some game to come along. Finally along came a lone duck, flying directly at them. Mooney suggested that Baker shoot the bird, which the latter did, scoring a direct hit. Down came the dead bird directly at the men. There they were standing in the blind with the bird coming at them at a high rate of speed. Roy spit on his hands in regular first baseman style and caught the bird fairly and shouted “out at first base.” It was a perfect catch of a perfect bird and Roy’s lifetime ambition was realized, in a way that day.

The post office department will not play Santa with the Christmas cards this year. All Christmas cards will go at the first class postage rate of six cents whether they are sealed or unsealed. The old unsealed rate used to be five cents, but this has been eliminated by the department. Virgil Walter, local postmaster, advises those sending Christmas cards to put return addresses on them or they will go to the dead letter office. He stresses the use of zip codes to speed delivery.
