• If you don’t believe that wishes do come true, just ask 5 year-old Jeff, son of Mr. and Mrs. Max Chambers. He wished “hard” for a black and white puppy and sure enough a winsome orphan was found in a box on Mrs. R.K. Martin’s front porch with a note attached. The note read, “My name is Princess, please give me a home or find me one. Thank you. P.S. I’m half labrador and half pointer.” Marshall Carl Loveland, who is Jeff and Jason’s grandfather, knew exactly where to find a home for Princess.

• When the First National Bank of Tarkio opened for business on December 12, 1883, it was the beginning of a partnership that has lasted for 60 years and bids fair to continue for many years more. David Rankin was the agitator in the organization of the bank but had the assistance of a great number of prominent men from all over the county. Forty-five men signed the certificate of organization on September 20, 1883. On December 4, 1883, the Treasury Department of the United States authorized the opening of the new bank. On December 12, the office of the bank opened for business in a frame building standing where the rental business house of Andrew Politz now stands. John A. Rankin, later president of the bank, was the first depositor and wrote the first check for an amount of $230. As of this printing (December 10, 1943), D.F. White (pictured above) is the oldest living depositor, having been a customer of the bank since January 8, 1884.
