American Legion Auxiliary Department of Missouri President Sharon Slagle of Maryville recently announced that Missouri was awarded a mini grant from the American Legion Auxiliary Foundation. This mini grant will be used to promote the Veterans Creative Arts Program in Missouri.
The Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) medical facilities use the creative arts as one form of rehabilitative treatment to help veterans recover from and cope with physical and emotional disabilities. Across the country each year, veterans enrolled at VA health care facilities compete in local creative arts competition. Winners at the local level are invited to The National Veterans Creative Arts Festival (NVCAF) which is a week-long annual event that celebrates veterans and showcases their talents. The competition includes performing art, which includes dance, drama, and music; visual art; and creative writing. The American Legion Auxiliary’s commitment to this program has developed since 2000. In 2015 the Auxiliary became a co-presenter of the National Creative Arts Festival which is held in a different city and state each year.
