With the correct spelling of hypothesis, Alex Barnett, a 7th grader at Tarkio, was named the 2019 Atchison County Spelling Bee Champion Thursday, February 14, 2019, in Fairfax. Trenton Kingery, a 7th grader at Fairfax, came in second. Abby Minino, a 7th grader at Rock Port, came in third place and Abbie Harms, a 6th grader at Tarkio, came in fourth. The spelling bee was postponed and rescheduled three times due to winter weather. Spellers were happy to finally have a chance to show off their “sweet” spelling skills on Valentine’s Day.

Other participants included: Rock Port – Bracton Cook, 6th grade; Cade Makings, 7th grade (substitute for Bannack Skillen), and Sara Newbanks, 8th grade; Tarkio – Rainy Nordhausen, 5th grade, and Alexis Gibler, 8th grade; and Fairfax – Tate Johnson, 5th grade, Kendall Kingery, 6th grade, and Hayden Riley, 8th grade.

Alex Barnett and Trenton Kingery will advance to the Regional Spelling Bee Saturday, March 2, 2019, at 1:00 p.m. at St. Francis Xavier Parish Center in St. Joseph, Missouri. Abby Minino and Abbie Harms will be alternates if Alex and Trenton are unable to attend.
