The Tarkio High School Girls’ 1999 State Basketball Team will be honored at this year’s MSHSAA State Basketball Tournament to be held on the campus of Missouri State University in Springfield, Missouri. The recognition will take place at the John Q. Hammons Arena on Saturday, March 9, at the halftime of the 1A Girls’ Championship game. This game is scheduled to begin at 8:10 p.m. It was 20 years ago that the 1999 Lady Indians’ Basketball Team won the 1A State Title by going undefeated with a record of 32-0. They won the semi-final game on Friday, March 19, 1999, over Newburg, 38-37. The next night, the Lady Indians defeated Crest Ridge 55-38 to capture the State Crown.
The 1999 coaches and team members were: Coaches – Head Coach Doug Kingery and Assistant Coach Casey Martin; seniors – Jamie Johnson, Mendy Martin, Ambera Wennihan, and Andrea Murphy; juniors – Jamie Knierim and Jennifer Peregrine; sophomores – Ashely Poptantyz, Beth Pearson, Charity Tubbs, Galadriel Gratton, Mary Wehmann, and Cassie Alberti; freshmen – Laurie Whittington and Melissa Mitchell; and student managers – Jeremy Smith and Amanda Salmond.
