April 28, 1944

• Mr. and Mrs. H.M. Hoffman, Westboro, celebrated their golden wedding anniversary this month. They were married April 3, 1894, in Lockwood, Missouri, where they lived until 1901, when they came to Atchison County.

• Boys of the Tarkio grade school who patrol street intersections near the school during periods preceding school hours and after include captain Morrison Thacker, Weyman George, David McAdams, Gordon Collins, Jack Bay, Dean Hathorne, Bruce Hogue, Frank Withrow, Jr., John David Dragoo, U.G. Roberts, Steve Wheeler, Buddy Belding, and Richard Hughes. The belts and badges were given by the Automobile Association of America and they will receive awards at the close of the year for satisfactory service.

• The first major building project since Pearl Harbor has been started here in Tarkio. Late in March the college received approval from the War Production Board in Kansas City to construct and equip a new power plant on the local college campus. The WPB approval calls for construction and equipment to cost slightly less than $25,000.

April 24, 1969

• An enthusiastic group of young people cleared a weed and litter field in town and in a short time the area was “beautified.” The youth, formed of U.M.Y.F. and U.P.Y.F., rapidly grew with the addition of other teens anxious to help their city in its Clean-Up, Paint-Up, Fix-Up campaign and are seeking more projects.

• At the district speech and drama contests at Northwest Missouri State College in Maryville last Friday and Saturday, the Tarkio High School play entry, “Lovers,” received a number 1 rating and was one of only two to qualify, pointwise, for state competition. Kayla Musch received the “best actress” award. Also qualifying for state in the prose reading competition was Debbie Nelson.

• Ed Taylor of Tarkio has recently opened a shop called Taylor Electronics and Service. The shop is located at the former site of Quality Auto at 114 Main Street in Tarkio. Taylor Electronics and Service specializes in CB radios, car stereos, police scanners, and accessories.

• The Community Awareness Team (C.A.T.) in Tarkio held a spaghetti dinner and variety show on Saturday, April 23. Approximately 275 guests were served at the dinner and $900 was raised from the dinner and show. There were 11 entries in the show. Winners were: 1st place, Tasha Beason; 2nd place, Tarkio 6th Grade D.A.R.E. graduates; 3rd place, Mitch Schupp; and 4th place, Bob Bruner.
