May 5, 1944

• Staff Sgt. Norman L. Nell, only son of Mr. and Mrs. John Nell of the Central Community, has been reported missing in action over New Guinea since April 16, his parents were notified by the War department last Friday. He was a ball turret gunner and second engineer on a B-24 bomber. Sgt. Nell, 21, was a graduate of Tarkio High School in the class of 1941 and attended Tarkio College prior to entering the service.

Editor’s Note: On April 16, 1944, a B-24 Liberator crewed by 10 airmen was returning to the aerodrome at Nadzab, New Guinea, after bombing enemy targets near Hollandia. The aircraft was altering course due to bad weather and was proceeding to the aerodrome at Saidor, but it never returned to friendly lines. The wreckage and remains were not found until the early 2000s and after identification processes, the remains were returned to their families in 2007 for proper burial.

May 1, 1969

• An attractive entranceway to the new cemetery road begins to take shape with the preparation of the footings for concrete posts with gas lanterns. Pictured in the paper were David Moore of Peoples Natural Gas, donors of the lanterns and the gas service, Dick VanGundy and Harold Boatman, chairman of the road committee, Gordon VanGundy, Gregg Cliver, and Jim Knapp of Knapp Construction, Mound City. Knapp donated the concrete posts with material donated by Tri-City Concrete.

• Girl Scouts of Cadet Troop 212 received the highest award possible in Girl Scouting Sunday night in ceremonies at Eppley Lounge at Tarkio College. Awards were presented to Kay Kemerling, Marcia Jones, Melanie Coe, Marilyn Bare, Charlotte Reeves, and Jeanne Jones.

• Tarkio Community Betterment Chairman Mrs. Mason Houghton and past chairmen Robert Rankin, Bernard Gorman and Mrs. Lee Troxel inspected the fifth star that Tarkio has earned in the state program. The star was placed on the signs at the city limits, airport and in front of city hall.

May 5, 1994

• Members of the Rotary Foundation’s Group Study Exchange Program were in Tarkio on Tuesday, April 26. They included four women and one man from the Netherlands. Members of the group have been in Northwest Missouri since the beginning of April and will depart for the Netherlands on May 6. They are Jan Hendriks, Sylvia den Besten, Liesbeth Pons, Renate ter Beek, and Anky Van Geel.
