• In 36 years of country newspaper experience, The Forum editor has accepted just about everything imaginable on subscription, but last week was the first time he has ever been sent currency of a foreign nation for such purposes. Clarence “Bob” Farris, with the Army in New Guinea, sent in a half-pound note of Australian currency to renew his Forum subscription, explaining that the soldiers there are paid in that kind of currency and that was all he had. We know not what the note is worth, but it is gladly accepted and unless The Forum gets too hard up, the money will be saved as a keepsake.

• Mrs. Emma C. Whitford celebrated her 91st birthday at her home in Fairfax Wednesday, May 3. She received numerous gifts, cards, and messages of congratulations, which was a source of much pleasure to her. Mrs. Whitford is unusually active for one of her age, is a regular church and Sunday school attendant, and keeps well posted on current happenings.

• Pupils of the fifth and sixth grades of the Fairfax schools gave a party at the auditorium Wednesday night, April 26, for Mrs. Constance Siekmann, their teacher. Games were played, fortunes told and a quiz program enjoyed. The party was a complete surprise for Mrs. Siekmann, who will be teaching at Fortescue next year.

• In recognition of Canada-U.S. Goodwill Week, Tuesday’s Kiwanis program emphasized the observance with a sound film on the many advantages of our neighbor to the north. Champ Breeden planned the program and M.D. Mulvania made the projection equipment available.

• The first four names out of the bag last Saturday were present to claim cash prizes in the Fairfax Community Club Jackpot drawing. Winner of the $50 first prize was Floyd Dunkle. Alan Bradfield claimed $25; W.L. Harrington, $15; and Francis Irvine, $10. The promotion will continue for nine weeks and adults can register once daily with all participating merchants.

May 5, 1994

• Tiffany Taylor of Fairfax was named National Free Throw Champ at the 1994 Elks National “Hoop Shoot” Free Throw Contest finals in Indianapolis, Indiana. Tiffany nailed 23 out of 25 free throw attempts to take the championship title in the finals of the 10-11 year old girls’ division. With the win, Tiffany will get her name enshrined in the National Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in Springfield, Massachusetts, along with all the past champions.
