East Atchison varsity catcher Keaton Williams jumped in the air to catch the throw then threw his body backwards in order to successfully tag the runner out, keeping a run from scoring.
Wolf Jake McEnaney looks up to see the ump’s safe call after a wild pitch sent Jake from third to home plate, scoring the winning run.
It was a great way to end the 2019 East Atchison Baseball season! The Wolves hosted Platte Valley in their last home game of the season and senior parents’ night and won both the varsity and junior varsity contests. Senior Wolves and their parents recognized included: Tyler Brown, son of Cheryl and John Brown; Gage McAdams, son of Melissa and Craig McAdams; Max Hopkins, son of Robin and Mike Lewis and Terry and Lori Hopkins; Jayce Navin, son of Michelle and Jim Navin; and Zach Garrison, son of Angela and Doug Garrison.
The Wolves’ varsity game was a nailbiter. EA took an early lead and by the third inning were ahead by five. However, Platte Valley quickly added to their score and by the last inning the score was tied at 9. With two on base, the Platte Valley pitcher intentionally walked Gage McAdams, loading the bases. Max Hopkins took the plate and during a wild pitch, Jake McEnaney was able to sprint from third to home, sliding over the plate beating the tag and scoring the winning run to end the game at 10-9. Besides the winning run, there were many outstanding hits and plays, including a double by Gus Hurst, a triple by Jake McEnaney, a homerun by Gage McAdams, a backwards tagout at the plate by catcher Keaton Williams, and a double play by Max Hopkins and Gage McAdams. The Wolves had 12 hits in the victory. Individual EA stats follow: Zach Garrison – 1 hit (1 single), 1 run, 1 strikeout, 2 putouts; Carter Holecek – 1 run; Tyler Brown – 1 walk, 2 strikeouts, 2 putouts; Jake McEnaney – 3 hits (2 singles and 1 triple), 2 RBIs, 3 runs, 1 putout, 1 error, 5.1 innings pitched, 13 hits (1 walk, 2 strikeouts, 9 runs, 7 earned runs); Gage McAdams – 2 hits (1 single and 1 homerun), 3 RBIs, 2 runs, 1 walk, 4 putouts, 1 error, 1 double play, 1.2 innings pitched (1 hit, 3 strikeouts); Gus Hurst – 2 hits (1 single, 1 double), 1 RBI, 1 run, 1 walk, 1 strikeout, 3 putouts, 1 error; Keaton Williams – 1 hit (1 single), 2 walks, 6 putouts; Max Hopkins – 4 strikeouts, 3 putouts, 1 doubleplay; Josh Smith – 2 hits (2 singles), 1 RBI, 1 run, 1 strikeout; Tony Skeen – 1 hit (1 single), 1 run, 1 strikeout.
The East Atchison junior varsity game was equally entertaining, with the Wolves winning 2-0. Three different pitchers took the mound for EA, Tony Skeen, Josh Smith, and Jayce Navin, and Devin Guajardo and Aaron Schlueter’s gloves didn’t miss catching the balls flying at them. Individual stats for EA follow: Bo Graves – 1 strikeout; Carter Holecek – 1 hit (1 single), 2 runs; Cory Stevens – 1 putout; Devin Guajardo – 1 walk, 3 putouts; Tony Skeen – 1 putout, 1.0 inning pitched (1 strikeout); Josh Smith – 1 putout, 1.0 inning pitched (1 hit); Aaron Schlueter – 1 hit (1 single), 1 RBI, 3 putouts; Jayce Navin – 1 hit (1 single), 1 RBI, 1 strikeout, 1.0 inning pitched.
